Safety Shutdown Systems Seminar
Have you ensured prevention of an Auckland Power Crisis occurring within
your company?
As increased capacity for limited attendance and unattended plant boilers
provides greater economies to users, the necessity to engineer totally
safe systems is paramount.
IMC’s Safety Shutdown Systems Seminar provides you with an update
on the application of international standards necessary to meet the safety
requirements of today.
The seminar provides key information on:
-
Safety stds required to ensure fully redundant systems
-
The latest safety systems available on today's market, ie trip & interlock
systems, burner management systems and pressure relief systems.
Friday, 28th August, 1998
9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Rose Park Quality Hotel, Auckland
Cost per head: $120 incl. GST & lunch
($100 for IMC members)
Programme of the IMC Safety Shutdown Systems Seminar
-
9:30 Emerging International Trends in Shutdown Systems, Mark
Portlock, Systems Consultant
-
Explores the life cycle cost savings of safety systems, safety versus availability
issues, and “peopleware” performance (as opposed to hard- and software)
in abnormal situation management.
-
10:15 Morning Tea
-
10:30 Putting IEC61508 into Practice, Bruce Durdle, Consultant Engineer
-
The IEC61508, sets out a method for assessing the level of integrity required
for a protective system. This presentation reviews methods to meet the
requirements of the IEC61508 std with the example of a typical industrial
development, ie. Liquigas’s pipeline and pump station protection.
-
11:15 Setting Safety Relief Valves To Cut Leakage, Mike Helean
- Technical Director
-
Safety-relief valves are indispensable to protect unfired pressure vessels,
process piping and equipment against excessive pressures. This presentation
provides information on design considerations for plants requiring
safety devices, back-pressure effects on vessels, pressure vessel requirements
and sizing factors
-
12:00 Lunch Break
-
1:00 The Application of Triple Modular Redundant Safety Systems,
Jeremy Seah, Asia Pacific Director
-
Process industry applications cover a wide range of potential hazards that
can seriously affect personnel, the environment and plant facilities. This
article provides an aid to users and specifiers in applying IEC61508 and
ISA SP84 when approaching the problem of implementing
safety and safety related systems in the process industry.
-
1:45 Safety Certification for Upgrades & Installation of Boilers
Bill Black - Manager Industrial Services
-
Bill Black will provide the governments perspective on upgrading
existing or installing new boilers to limited attendance or
unattended status. Includes a discussion of certification
for such equipment and plants.
-
2:30 Afternoon Tea
-
2:45 High Pressure and Temperature Steam Control in Geothermal Applications,
Alan Pointon - Mechanical Engineering Manager
-
Kingston Morrison are involved in many geothermal
power generation projects, and this presentation will address some of the
more interesting control and safety aspects.
-
3:30 Safety Systems on Electric Power Generation Plants, David Moore -
Senior Consultant
-
A review of the evolution of safety systems and an overview of some recent
projects. These include co-generation plants at BHP NZ Steel,
CHH Kinleith, and Anchor Products Te Awamutu.
Presenter Personal Profiles
Mark Portlock - Honeywell
Mark has had many years experience in the design and implementation
of control systems in hazardous environments in the UK and New Zealand
Bruce Durdle - Independent Consultant Engineer
Safety systems are critical in gas turbine, boiler, compressor and pipeline
applications. Bruce has had extensive experience in these fields, most
recently reviewing the Liquigas LPG pipeline from Oaonui to Port Taranaki
Mike Helean - Custom Controls Limited
Has over 23 years in control valve engineering, instrumentation and
control system application engineering. Mike is involved in most large
scale steam distribution projects throughout New Zealand.
Bill Black - Marine & Industrial Safety Inspection Services
With a background as Senior Investigations Engineer Surveyor for the
original Marine Department, Bill is uniquely positioned to provide an update
on emerging requirements and tips on how to simplify compliance.
Jeremy Seah - ABB Industry Pte Ltd, Safety Division
Jeremy heads the Asia Pacific August Systems organisation, which has
recently become part of the ABB group. His experience included major power
plant control system design and implementation throughout Asia.
Alan Pointon - Kingston Morrison
With new projects in Russia and Indonesia, Alan’s team are exposed to
a diverse range of challenges in power engineering projects. Geothermal
steam control is a complex sciences, as every field has unique properties
and requires a different solution.
David Moore - Design Power New Zealand Ltd
David specialises in the design and commissioning of electrical and
control systems, with particular experience in thermal and hydro-electric
power stations.
